Apple launches iBox: advanced technology, minus the technology

Cupertino, CA — After years of thinking outside the box, Apple has focused its design and engineering smarts on the box itself.

Today, thousands of Apple faithful lined up at Apple Stores across the U.S. to see the result: iBox.

iBox has no touchscreen, no battery and no software. But what it lacks in technology, it makes up for in magic. As Apple’s press release explains, “iBox is pure imagination — the first Apple product that can be whatever you want it to be.”

In fact, iBox’s only specs are its measurements: 10 x 14 x 2. Thanks to Apple’s unibox engineering (iBox is machined from a single piece of cardboard), its skin is as thin as an eggshell, yet stronger than a pizza box.

Despite its infinite possibilities, most people will use iBox for the obvious: putting stuff inside. Apple claims that iBox’s 280 cubic inches can literally store over 26 million combinations of different-sized objects.

A multimillion ad campaign will make iBox a household word (click to enlarge)

“This is light years ahead of other containment devices,” raves Morgan Stanley analyst Harrison Gerber, “No tabs, no slots, nothing tricky. To open it, you just lift the lid. Pure Apple genius.”

Though sparse in the innards department, iBox out-performs MacBook Pro in one key area: it’s available in both glossy and matte finishes. Even better, it can be viewed from absolutely any angle. iBox is also coated with an invisible polymer that resists finger sweat.

Apple is making two iBox accessories available at launch. The Smart Cover protects the top surface of iBox and lets you prop it up at a pleasing angle. The iBox Box is a plastic case that lets you carry iBox from place to place without risk of damage.

To help customers enjoy iBox right out of the box, Apple Stores are offering free One-to-One sessions with each purchase.

“Once again, Apple owns a new category,” says Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray. “It’ll take competitors a year to get in the game, and by then Apple will have a second-generation iBox.”

Indeed, iBox 2 is already the subject of speculation. Experts believe it will be up to 33% thinner and offer a choice of colors. Apple refused to speculate on future plans.

iBox has a list price of $69 and is available immediately. AppleCare is optional, covering all damage to iBox except that caused by sitting on it.

    Don’t you mean ‘matte’ finish?

  • http://www.doghousebnb.com Naitove

II think Boxy was first out of the box with this idea.

  • Barry

I guess we won’t be seeing any unboxing videos on YouTube for the proud new owners of the iBox.

  • SamuelJohnson

Maybe they’re Canadian…or British. Probably British, since “matt” is more common there. That’s what happens when you live on an island – you spend all your time building castles and and fawning over the ridiculous notion of royalty and never learn how to spell. But…on the up-side, that kind of “island mentality” is actually appropriate for Apple and their mythically exclusive mediocrity. So – jolly good show, chappies! Pip, pip – carry on, eh wot?

If it were a real Apple product, you wouldn’t be able to open the box to see what’s inside.

Some of your earlier articles are funny. But the recent ones are all pretty lame.

  • Aadhoc

I’m Agoraphobic and Claustrophobic, so the iBox isn’t for me.

  • Winfred

yes… i saw an early prototype of this one at youtube. it was lost & found in a bar i believe. at that time it was covered by a totally different box :0)

  • Tom

I know this sounds stupid, but I kind of want one. Its just so well designed and using words like imagination makes me think I’ll open it up and it’ll be filled with awesome wonders! well done!

  • Gpzob

I want one. Will it do everything that my Apple Pie Pod does as well?

  • Mikael

Does it come in black? And what about a pro model in aluminium?

  • http://odayyousif.wordpress.com Oday Yousif

    I’ll take 3.

  • Granfalloon

I’m waiting for the iBox mini. The iBox is too expensive, but I still need a replacement for my XBOX. Does anyone know if there is a trade-in program?

  • Steve

Do not buy! Wait for iBox2!!

  • Kucing

There are rumors that the iBox Pro will launch in Q3 for the business community.

  • http://obligatorydiscord.blogspot.com Roehl

You know it’s fake when it touts an Apple product that says “works forever.” :D

  • http://twitter.com/akfg_fan Ramon

I’ll take the 3G version in the (RED) color.

  • ED

OMG, I hear that they can’t make enough iBox to meet demand because the tsunami soaked all the cardboard. Quick sell Apple stock before it’s too late.

  • aRg

it’s a steal at $69, shouldn’t it be more expensive?

  • Anonymous

Meh. iBox is a closed system. Can you resize it if your item is too wide or to tall or too long? Steve doesn’t let you reconfigure it. It’s a one size fits all solution. You should get an Android Box, it’s an open box system. With it’s flat sheet of cardboard, you can fold it to any sized box you like. Open trump closed!!

Google disclaimer: Any folding, coloring, gluing and other reconfiguration of Android Box needs to be preapproved by head of Android development team.

Wait for the Dev-Team to release the limeb0x jailbreak.
